Richardson to Head DGA

Gov. Bill Richardson (D-NM) has been selected to head up the Democratic Governor's Association. While Bush is stacking his cabinet with latinos, Richardson seems to be the party's best hope at keeping this incredibly important group of voters in the Dem's camp.

To me, Gov. Richardson is the party's most attractive possible Presidential candidate in the year 2008. The southwest is becoming as competitive an area as the midwest. And while there aren't any big electoral prizes like Ohio or Missouri to pick up. Kerry's states plus NM, NV, and CO equal 271 electoral votes. Kerry recieved 49%, 48%, and 47% in those states respectively. McCain's popularity has put Arizona out of reach for the time being, but the rest of that region is up for grabs!

And what I really love about a possible Richardson candidacy is that it wouldn't just be pandering to the latino community. He's as qualified as any person in America to be President of the United States. A Democratic Governor who's foreign policy credentials are impecable. Even George W. Bush trusted him enough to send him to North Korea to talk about that country's nuclear capabilites.

Richardson for pres. are promosing. You're right there. Also, I believe we'll only have a chance for pres. with a governor as a candidate. We all knew we were fighting historic trends running a senator for pres. I love the idea of what he could do for the democrats.

One problem though is that while there are a lot of reasons to like Richardson, he's no reformer. Or at least he's shown no signs up till now of becoming one. If we the netroots are serious about this whole reform direction, then Richardson may not be our best choice for symbolic leader at this time.

This administration sucks.

Richardson couldn't event bring in his own state! (none / 0)

Richardson couldn't even bring in his own state with a 19 point Democratic registration edge for the Democratic ticket.

Why should he be on the ticket in 2008?

I believe there's also a pretty nasty scandal or three involving his stewardship of the Department of Energy under Clinton.

Richardson deserves a look... (none / 0)

... but, he did fail to deliver NM.

Richardson, despite being a privileged kid who landed in New Mexico to play politics only after eastern prep school and college, looks and acts the part of the Western Hispanic Governor. He has many fine qualities as a campaigner.
